The Routine is a Changin’

Posted Mar 16, 2011 in Life, The Boys

If you know anything about me, you know that it is rare to see me awake and moving before noon. Well… that has just all changed.

Why has this solid routine that I have been consistently implementing for most of my life suddenly become obsolete, you ask? In short… Karin went back to work at the beginning of the month and has left me in charge of the Squirmalotypus for the mornings. I think the latest I’ve been able to sleep in has been 9:15am. Today it was 7:30am. I know… your probably saying to yourself, “Poor baby, etc.” But before you judge me, let me explain.

For the last nine and one half years, I have been teaching late afternoon and evening classes at Seattle Central Community College (SCCC). Typically, I am not home from work before 8:00pm and many nights am not home until 10:00pm. I think the earliest I have ever gotten to sleep is 12:00am and most nights I have usually been up until 3:00am. My working hours have then been 1:00pm to 9:00pm. It has worked out to be a pretty good schedule for me over the years.

Now that I am a morning person and have a new audience member to entertain, I need new activities to keep the morning running smoothly. Since typing with one hand gets a bit boring and can lead to an uncontrollable outburst, I have had to get positively constructive with the new way of passing the time.

Typically a nice mile and one half walk up to the coffee shack and back on a dry day keeps us busy for at least an hour. August seems to enjoy the walk and usually falls asleep along the way. The dog is also especially appreciative for this event as she is able to get a good solid walk in and a few cookies to boot. But, what am I going to do with the rest of the morning?

Well… there is always a few bottles that need to be emptied, a couple of naps to get in and some diapers that need changing. That takes care of another big chunk of time and keeps the baby entertained, but what else can we fit into the schedule?

Wait a minute… doesn’t vacuuming get a baby to stop crying? I bet the wife will be happy about this!

Hahahaha! Vacuuming helps to not hear the baby crying. On the other hand, lying on the top of the the old fashioned clothes dryer (the one that gets all warm and rattles) always made Claire calm down.

Just came back from Prague, a city that all of a sudden is full of dads walking around with strollers – a sight unseen some 10 years and more ago. You would fit perfectly!
