Faculty Working Conditions are Student Learning Conditions

As many of you know, I am a part-time instructor at Seattle Central Community College. I have been teaching there since 2001 and very much love my job. But, this week I found out that our state senate wants to cut health care benefits for part-time employees.

Really?! Does our state really want to bite that hands that feed them?! Do they know that 70% of the instructors who teach at our college are only part-time with little hope of ever becoming full-time? Do they know how bureaucratically difficult it is to hire an instructor full-time? Do they know that even though I am part-time, I still put in 25hrs./week and then have to free-lance to round out my income

If Senate Bill 5905 passes, I will most likely be forced to give up the job I love and look elsewhere. Don’t make me do that to my students who rely on me to teach them the industry skills that get them a better job.

Here is what I told the Seattle Central Circuit.

It would be our loss and a huge mistake on their part.
